Timing is everything. When we decide to do something or perform an action, the context of its success is largely defined by the timing of everything. The greatest idea or product means nothing if it is released at the wrong time. This was the case with Windows Phone, a very good idea that withered and died on the vine because it was released too late after iOS and Android had established themselves as the dominant players in the market. It is in this context that the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra has entered the smartphone conversation.

In a vacuum, the…

It’s the middle of the last ice age and you are in the cave on a cold winter’s night chewing the fat, and I don’t mean gossiping. You are chewing real, gristly fat from some animal you just killed and cooked because if you eat only lean meat you’ll starve to death or get protein poisoning. By evolutionary necessity, you find fat irresistible. Many thousands of years later this will cause your descendants to eat Doritos and Slim Jims, but that’s not your problem.

As a former nurse and recovering alcoholic, I’m amazed to learn how many health issues are connected to a struggling liver. Before I quit drinking, I had a few health conditions that were problematic and mysterious. I had a lot of nerve pain, problems with my balance, digestive issues, a puffy face, and anemia. I had no idea they were linked to a liver trying to do its job while filtering out all the alcohol I drank.

You’d think (being a nurse) that I would have known what was happening to me. …

The Washington Nationals acquired first baseman Josh Bell from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for right-handed pitcher Wil Crowe and right-handed pitcher Eddy Yean on Thursday.

Bell, 28, joins the Nationals after five seasons with the Pirates including the 2019 season in which he was named a National League All-Star. In those five seasons, he hit .261 with a .349 on-base percentage and a .466 slugging percentage with 105 doubles, 13 triples, 86 home runs and 309 RBI across 552 games.

“We are thrilled to be adding a player of Josh Bell’s caliber to our team,” said Nationals President of…

As 2020 comes to a close, I wanted to share my annual lists of favorites. I’ll start by sharing my favorite books this year, deliberately omitting what I think is a pretty good book — A Promised Land — by a certain 44th president. I hope you enjoy reading these as much as I did.

  • Homeland Elegies — Ayad Akhtar
  • Jack — Marilynne Robinson
  • Caste — Isabel Wilkerson
  • The Splendid and the Vile — Erik Larson
  • Luster — Raven Leilani
  • How Much Of These Hills Is Gold — C Pam Zhang
  • Long Bright River — Liz Moore
  • Memorial Drive —…

OnThursday, a panel of medical experts met to discuss the Covid-19 vaccine produced by Moderna, with the goal of deciding whether to recommend emergency use approval of the vaccine to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Among the many topics they covered in the eight-hour livestream, they discussed deaths and serious adverse events documented in Moderna’s data.

This information was included in a briefing document published by the FDA ahead of Thursday’s meeting. As in Pfizer’s trial data, which showed that six people had died but that none of those deaths were related to the vaccine, the Moderna data also…

The most tedious part when implementing Redux is the amount of boilerplate code that you need to write in order to handle the data flow between components and the Redux store. Redux itself was inspired by Flux, a data flow architecture introduced in 2014.

Since the release of React, we’ve seen a transition from the use of class components into the use of functional components with hooks. No offense to Redux and Flux (they are still awesome) but maybe it’s time to use a new pattern that takes advantage of React’s maturity.

Jotai is a state management library for React…

As pharmaceutical companies start obtaining emergency use authorizations and manufacturing coronavirus vaccine doses as quickly as they can, wealthy nations are hedging their bets by reserving far more of those vaccine doses than they need. In fact, many of the world’s richest countries have enough doses spoken for to inoculate their entire population multiple times over. Meanwhile, many less economically advantaged nations are struggling to secure enough to cover a meaningful fraction of their population within the next few years.

Due to manufacturing limits, it could take many developing countries until 2024 to obtain enough vaccines to immunize their entire…

“Myspace changed my life,” said no one.

Well, it changed mine. I was an unknown musician looking for an audience. I set up a Myspace account.

My first friend was this weird guy called Tom. Tom looked freaking happy and he was the co-founder of the site. He looked like someone that could actually be my friend. I was a Myspace prostitute. I made friends with everybody. Myspace was where I published the remixes I created and played in nightclubs as a DJ.

Unfortunately, Myspace didn’t make me a successful musician. …
